Responsibilities: • Build a comprehensive ERM framework, including model risk, aligned with regulatory expectations. • Lead the development and launch of a machine-learning-driven working capital loan product, refining risk tiering and loan amount assignment with data science teams. Results: • Started and grew a working capital loan program for health care providers to $10 million in less than 1 year. • Built an ERM program, including model risk, in less than 1 year.
Responsibilities: • Direct risk management and credit strategies for a multi-billion-dollar portfolio encompassing over 100 consumer and business lending programs. • Develop capital adequacy models and applied advanced machine learning algorithms to improve risk separation and strengthen underwriting performance. • Lead FinTech partnership with PayPal. Results: • Grew the Bank’s loan portfolio from $4 billion to over $12 billion in 5 years. • Increased profitability of the portfolio by between 2016 and 2019 by 39%. • Maintained Comenity Capital Bank’s profitability (ROA) at more than twice the industry average during the entire 8 years of my tenure. • Brought to fruition a very profitable FinTech / Partner Bank relationship with PayPal delivering business results across risk and growth objectives while maintaining strong risk governance and oversight. • Introduced new private label partner monitor program that allowed they Bank to intervene and limit volume with failing partners.
Zions Bancorporation | VP, Operational & Technology Risk / InfoSec Risk | Sept 2009 – Jun 2011 Responsibilities: • Build risk and control assessment programs across operational, technology, and financial reporting domains within a large OCC-regulated institution. • Support FFIEC, GLBA, NIST, and ISO 27001 regulatory compliance, developing operational risk dashboards for executive visibility. Results: • Passed all OCC examinations in the areas of Operational and Technology risk. • Introduced clear, concise risk dashboards for Executives and the Board • Built a team of skilled and motivated risk managers.
Responsibilities: • Build the bank from the de novo stage, including all credit risk policies, frameworks, and strategies. • Build a holistic ERM policies and frameworks to support private student lending. • Support and monitor educational institutions including large public and private schools, for-profit schools, career training schools and programs. Both undergraduate programs and graduate programs. • Craft credit risk strategies and predictive models for student lending, assessing credit performance, loss drivers, and long-term P&L profitability trade-offs. Models included both standard statistical models and machine-learning decision trees. Results: • Obtained FDIC and State of Utah approval to open the bank in record time, less than 6 monhs. • Built the Bank’s very profitable lending portfolio from zero to over $4 billion less than 4 years. • Built predictive models providing new insights about how students from different types of education institutions differ in payment patterns and loan losses, saving the company millions of dollars of losses.
